Bmi deems mobile boarding trial 'a success'
Paperless boarding could be a step closer thanks to the work of a leading UK airline. Bmi became the first British carrier to introduce mobile boarding on some of its services in a trial programme this year. Now a spokesperson has announced that the initial operation went well and that the firm will announce plans for future usage of the technology within the next few weeks. During the trial period the service was available for passengers flying to Heathrow Airport from Edinburgh Airport and Manchester Airport, as well on flights both ways between Belfast City and Heathrow. The system sees a barcode sent to a passenger's mobile phone or PDA, as part of a message containing full flight details, as would normally be included on a standard printed boarding pass. At the security gate the barcode can then be scanned by a member of staff. The system is aimed at reducing delays and increasing efficiency. German flagship airline Lufthansa recently acquired a controlling stake in Bmi.SUMLUNG Tech.
